About Heirloom Portraits
Douglas B. Smith is one of Kansas’ premier artists and photographers. For over thirty years, he has been honored to share special occasions with families, businesses and charities in the Northeast Kansas area. Doug lives in Manhattan with his wife, Joan, and has raised four children who have attended Manhattan High School and Kansas State University. Heirloom Portraits is a family-owned business which is proud to support the Little Apple. Doug began studying photography as a photojournalist amidst the mountains and awe-inspiring landscapes of Utah and had the privilege to study formal portraiture and bridal photography with the late Don Blair of Salt Lake City, Utah, wedding photography and senior photography with Charles Lewis of Grand Rapids, Michigan; wedding photography with Don Feltner of the Denver, Colorado and portraiture and studio design with Jerry Brian of Carlesbad, CA.
Doug is often cited as a photographer who has excellent timing. His portraits capture not just the image, but the unique personality of each individual. Doug is able to see the inner and outer beauty in the people he works with and finds artistic expression in reflecting that in personalized portraiture. Your father’s laugh lines, your mother’s soft smile, the twinkle in your grandmother’s eye, your family’s characteristic check-bones, and your child’s curiosity manifest themselves in our detailed craftsmanship.
Sittings and weddings with Doug are available by appointment only. Although we have a fully equipped portrait studio at our business location, most of our sessions are primarily photographed in our client's homes or at other scenic locations such as churches, events centers, outdoor settings, etc. Weekend weddings are usually booked from between several months to a year in advance and sitting appointments require scheduling. Please call today to check for availability. We look forward to working with you!
